Engagement Poses I Love

Engagement Poses I Love

It goes without saying that no two engagement sessions are the same, because no two couples are the same! Something that is disheartening to see is couples expecting that their engagement photos will be a cutout of what they saw on Pinterest or what they were told was expected of them, instead of allowing their natural relationship to influence the session.

Something that I've learned over the years is that not every pose is going to work for every couple. Sometimes my favorite pose just isn't working one day for whatever reason. Or the pose that I think would work well might not be all that exciting or comfortable to my couples. It's important for my work to be adaptable. A common trap in engagement photography is to keep a backlog of poses to revisit each session. And not that every session can't include specific "winning" poses, but it's all too easy to get into a routine and forget the client behind the pose. Which isn’t my personal goal in shooting these sessions.

Planning a Photographed Proposal

Planning a Photographed Proposal

Hey hey, it’s engagement season! This is the time of year where I receive the highest volume of inquiries for weddings. My inbox is filled with the cutest engagement stories and it fills my heart with such happiness. Engagement Season lasts until after Valentine’s Day, so if you are hoping to plan a sweet and meaningful proposal, but want it to be done right, stick around. This post will outline exactly how to plan a photographed proposal without spoiling the surprise. Ladies, you have a duty to your friends to send this post to their boyfriends if this is something you know your babe would appreciate. I’m just saying ;)

So where do you start? Let's start with the obvious.

Bringing your dog to your photoshoot? Here's what you should know.

Bringing your dog to your photoshoot? Here's what you should know.

One of the most commonly asked questions I get about engagement shoots is “can I bring my dog”? Um, YES! is always my answer. It’s no secret I’m an animal lover. After adopting Penny, one of the first things we wanted to do was take a million pictures with her. We get it. A family portrait isn’t complete without your sweet pup. But what’s the etiquette? How do you properly bring your dog to a photoshoot without overwhelming you, the dog, or your photographer? I’ve got some tricks in my back pocket!

Keith + Jenny: Trillium Lake Proposal

Keith + Jenny: Trillium Lake Proposal

Shooting secret proposals is one of those session types that I wish we could shoot more of, but it's definitely NOT for everyone. But for those who opt to surprise their babe with not only a shiny ring, but also photos of the special moment, are definitely bring us photographers a lot of joy. Surprise proposals are also VERY tricky...because they're supposed to be a surprise. In our experience actually, we've never had to hide behind trees or cars to capture the event, but actually working with the couple before it even happens. The trick is, finding the RIGHT excuse to keep it a secret. Personally, I loved Keith's disguise. He promised Jenny I was just getting started in this business and needed couples to pose for me to grow my portfolio! At first, Jenny didn't believe him. But he swore up and down this wasn't the moment he would propose...whoops!

Eight Tips For Creating Your Save The Dates

Eight Tips For Creating Your Save The Dates

First of all, congratulations! If you're reading this, you're either engaged, know someone who's engaged, or are hoping for a ring this Christmas. Either way, I'm glad you're here. Let's talk about announcements! The first time you'll announce the engagement publicly is likely through Facebook. You post the proposal images, the ring shot, and a couple photos of the two of you absolutely beaming. The second announcement will come after you've decided on a date. For some couples, this comes after they've found their dream venue, and for others, it relies entirely on your family's schedules.

Cannon Beach Engagement: Julie + James

What can be more flattering than a couple from out of state reaching out to have their photos taken by YOU while on a mini getaway? Not much comes to mind. When the newly engaged Julie and James had started making plans for their trip to the Oregon Coast, they realized that this special getaway (even if surrounded by work events), needed to be documented. It was their first time visiting the gorgeous Cannon Beach, and quickly they decided they absolutely needed to come back and visit. What's not to love about the salt in the air, the stunning view of Haystack Rock, and the endless stretch of beach. I had to brag, but the Pacific Northwest really has the most incredible beaches.

Meeting the two for the first time, especially on such an occasion, was a real treat for me and Jem. It was obvious that this kind and silly pair had a deeper understanding of love and friendship than the average couple. How else can I describe them but sweet, passionate, carefree, and warm.

Being in their presence was a gift enough, not to mention they were so much fun to photograph. They have a way of being fully there with each other at all times, without making it seem like they are ignoring or forgetting the outside world. But simply, enjoying it together.
