Three Ways to Celebrate Earth Day

Maybe Earth Day isn't the most memorable of holidays, but it's still an important one. Most of us celebrate by biking or walking all day, or by remembering to recycle more, or by spending the day in the garden. All of these are effective ways to extra love on our great planet! However, if you're looking for something more sustainable, especially for those planning "green" weddings, here are some of my favorite ways to thank Earth year round.

1. Support Your Local Beekeepers

Bees are so important to our agriculture! About 1/3 of the foods we eat depend on pollination. The best way to support agriculture and a healthy growth of our planet's resources, it's important to purchase your honey and beeswax products from local beekeepers. They are not only passionate about bee safety, but also bee conservation. Their priority is growing and sustaining bee populations to keep the planet healthy and happy! If you're planning on giving honey as a wedding favor, consider local or organic honey first!

2. Use In-Season Flowers

To avoid the use of unnecessary chemicals and farming, only buy flowers that are in season, and always try to buy local and organic. This is a great conversation to have with your florist, because she can tell you not only the prettiest flowers in season, but also the ones that will last the longest, especially on a hot summer's day! Most local floral shops will only carry what's in season, but always ask if you're unsure. Instead of buying vases of flowers, consider buying a few potted blooms or plants so they last longer in your home.

3. Opt Outdoors

This is another tip that applies to everyone. Whether you're looking for a wedding venue, or are planning out your weekend, try and pick something that is outdoors. Oregon summers can be hot, but by picking an outdoor wedding venue, you're avoiding the use of additional electricity. This will also be a perk for your wedding photos, as natural light is always more flattering than artificial. If you're putting together your weekend plan, consider maybe having a picnic outdoors instead of going out to eat, or bring a book to the park instead of your laptop! Cut the use of energy and electricity whenever possible to not only save YOU money, but save the planet little steps at a time.

I hope this inspires you to go a little greener, not just today, but every day! If you're planning an eco friendly wedding, I'd love for you to share some of the things you're doing to promote a healthy planet!
