Karl Cristie was living in San Diego, California as a nurse, and Joseph was doing his optometry rotation at the site where KC's roommate works. They met during Balboa Park's December Nights through KC's roommate, and spent the majority of that night getting to know each other.
Their first date was over breakfast. Karl Cristie was on her way to Los Angeles when she called Joe asking if he wanted to have breakfast. He agreed, even though he had already eaten. Karl Cristie recalls it was casual, the way a morning date should be. After finishing up their meal, they decided to stretch the impromptu date a little longer over at a sports bar to watch a football game. The date was as relaxed and simple, and absolutely perfect for the both of them.
Not every date has been that casual since then. They are natural adventurers and like to find time on the weekends to explore with their pups. For their engagement session, we decided to explore the Oregon Coast in the early morning, since they are usually up in the mountains. Originally, we intended on shooting at Indian Beach, a quiet nook in Ecola State Park, but because of weather damage, we were rerouted to Cannon Beach. An equally beautiful beach, especially at sunrise, to tell their fun and romantic story.
"After about 6 days of traveling around Iceland using a camper (yes, we essentially camped all over Iceland), and almost being stuck in a snow storm and wet sand, KC was just about ready to throw in the towel and head for the nearest hotel (it was the first time KC ever camped!). Joe, knowing that a good meal and drinks can make a world's difference, took us to eat at a nice restaurant. Well it worked and KC agreed to continue camping since the following day, we are heading to Jokulsarlon at 0400 just about when the sun rises. When we arrived at Jokulsarlon, the lagoon and iceberg beach itself was empty, no one was around. It was so peaceful, the only sound present came from the few seals swimming across the water. The sun reflected on the crystal blue water and glacial ice. It was breathtaking."
"Joe, as he did throughout the trip, set his tripod and asked KC to take a picture with him. KC joined him to take a picture and as she was getting ready to smile for the camera, Joe says, 'I have a question for you.' As KC turns to face Joe, he gets on his knee and asks, 'Will you marry me?'"
"As a couple, we love experiencing new cultures and therefore seek out opportunities to try new cuisine and see new places. All relationships are hard and ours is no different from that, and having been in a long-distance relationship for 2 years, we feel that we have gotten stronger and closer as a couple. Moreover, we make it a point to tackle everything as a team and be on each other's side. To sum us up in 3 words... Adventurous, supportive and resilient."
"We are also more fun loving, but sometimes romantic! I would like to come home to a random bouquet of flowers just because."
"I love that Joe brings the best in me, whether it is to calmly re-evaluate situations or finding comfort in him during difficult times. I love that he calls me out on my BS and challenges me to be better. I love the little things he does like putting snacks in my bags without me knowing, because I get hungry and essentially have to eat every 2 hours!"
"I love how caring and passionate Karl Cristie is. She is always there for me whether it's taking care of me when I'm sick, supporting me with my hobbies, or just being a great listener. I love her energy for life, and that she loves to travel and try new things as much as I do."
"In marriage, we are most looking forward to having each other and being a family."
A gorgeous Oregon coast sunrise, paired with an adventurous and fun loving couple, equals one of the the most dreamy engagement sessions yet. There's nothing that sets my heart on fire more than creating gorgeous and romantic images for my couples, and getting to create a fun and special day for them to play. Only 30 more days until the wedding!!!
